EXPERIMENT: 002
Last week I was playing around with my camera during the videoblogger videoconference and I found that I was really entranced by shooting closeups of eveyone's tiny little video preview. I love the way the magnified pixels look and the apparent black grid between them. So I created this video by filming myself with my Xacti at 320 X 240. Then I played that video back at 1/2 size in the QuickTime player while I filmed it from a few centimeters away. Then, like all the stuff that I film with the Xacti, I converted it to DV, edited it in Final Cut Pro and then exported it for the web.
So what do you think? What does it look like I'm thinking about? Try watching it with and without the the sound. How does that affect it?

I LIKE THE PIXELATED VIDEO LOOK, AND AS FAR AS WHAT YOUR THINKING.....HMMM..."THIS LOOKS SO RAD...AM I STILL UP?...I DIG IT.
Michael, You are right this is a weird and compelling look! The gridded pixels are what sells it, with a sort of mosaic effect. This kind of experimentation that you're doing really pushes this medium. I think many people rely on filters for their effcts and it tends to all look similar. Then you come along experimenting with how the camera responds under realworld circumstances and get a wholly unique effect. Nice job! I will definitely be messing around with this sort of technique for a while.
Yeah I love "analog" video techniques. Ryanne and I have talked about doing tutorials to get people thinking about how to experiment. Here's some links to old things ('89 - '90?) that I posted to my videoblog a wile back. These effects were all done without computers.
